High School Updates

Students respond to interest survey and provide great input!

    posted Feb 5, 2013, 7:04 PM by John Eldridge   [ updated Feb 5, 2013, 7:08 PM ]

On February 2, 2013 we had a high school dance/party for all students who have applied to attend the new Chatham Charter High School in the 9th and 10th grade during the 2013-14 school year.  They were each allowed to invite a few friends.  It was a great time for the kids to see who their future high school classmates were, but it was also a great time for us to get some feedback from them for us to consider as we continue to move forward with our plans.  There are two documents attached to this post that we put together after the event. One of them has the responses the students gave us from a series of questions we asked regarding the direction of the new high school, and the other displays the results of the clubs/sports survey.

We need and value the opinions of our students and parents.   Once we have completed the lottery process on March 6, 2013 at 9;30, we will go through this process again with the students and parents who we know will be attending our high school next year.  For more information, please feel free to contact the school at 919-742-4550.

State Board of Education meeting 12-5-2012

posted Dec 6, 2012, 8:06 AM by John Eldridge

While we were hoping that the State Board of Education was going to vote to approve our high school expansion application, they decided to move the vote to the January Board meeting.  There were 11 other schools who were seeking expansion approval, so the State Board of Education reviewed each application with the Office of Charter Schools.  Our application was recommended to be approved in January, and there were no questions or comments about our application, so we are extremely confident that we will receive permission to expand to grades 9 and 10 during the January Board meeting.  Stay tuned for more information!

Updated Dates set for Parent and Community interest meetings for New High School!

Dates have been set for Chatham Charter representatives to begin meeting with rising 9th and 10th grade parents.  Pending State Board of Education approval in early February, we will open a brand new high school for 9th and 10th graders in August 2013.  The first scheduled meeting dates are as follows:

    • 7:00 December 4, 2012- This meeting will be for parents of any rising 9th or 10th grade students   The meeting will be held in the Gym following our home basketball game.
    • 7:00 December 10, 2012- This meeting will be for parents of any rising 9th or 10th grade students.  The meeting will be held in the Chatham Charter Gym.
    • 7:00 December 13, 2012-  This meeting will be for parents of any rising 9th or 10th grade students.  The meeting will be held in the Chatham Charter Gym.
In each of these meetings, we will present the curriculum that will be used in conjunction with Central Carolina Community College as well as a sample of the extra-curricular/sport offerings.  We will answer any questions that parents and students may have, and will end each meeting with an opportunity to fill out an application so that students can be entered into the lottery for available seats.  As a reminder all current Chatham Charter students in the 8th grade who are interested in enrolling in the high school program will be automatically accepted, but parents will be asked to sign a letter of intent so that we are aware of your future plans.

We look forward to these meetings and are hopeful that you will share these dates with as many people as possible so they can be aware of what we intend to accomplish with our high school addition.

County Commissioners send letter of support for the High School Plans!

posted Nov 27, 2012, 6:27 PM by John Eldridge

We had the opportunity to present the Chatham Charter High School plans to the Chatham County Board of Commissioners on Monday November 19, 2012.  As a result, we received a letter of support from them, recognizing this as an opportunity to attract businesses to our area.  The letter we received is attached and a link to the video presentation are found below.  The presentation starts with about 14 minutes left in Part 1 and is the first 3 minutes of Part II.  We are extremely thankful to the County Commissioners for allowing us to present our plans to them and are excited about the future of our school!

We have applied for the expansion to add grades 9 - 12.  The application that was submitted to the State is attached to this entry, which will allow you to see a glimpse of what we plan on offering to our students, when we receive approval from the State Board of Education.

It is our hope to begin having interest meetings with families to share our plans, answer related questions, speak about our sports programs, and to get the word to the community that we do intend to start a high school program.  There will be more information to come regarding these interest meetings in the near future, so stay tuned!

We are currently preparing to send our application into the State Board of Education requesting their permission to expand our grade levels from K - 8 to K - 12.  Below is the current timeline for your information:

October 8, 2012- Application for expansion due to the  Department of Public Instruction.  We are requesting to add grades 9 - 12, with no more than 50 students per grade level.  We plan to add grades 9 and 10 in 2013-14.  We will then add 11th grade in 2014-15 and 12th grade in 2015-16 for a total of 200 student.

October 25, 2012- Chatham County Schools will submit an impact statement to the Department of Public Instruction as a result of our application.

It will then take approximately 60 days for the State Board of Education to review all the applications for Charter School expansion.  We expect to hear from the State Board in late January, early February.

Until then, we are working to build the curriculum for our students and we are meeting with a building planner to prepare the plans we will be using for our new facility.  As we review the building plans, we are also working to plan for any sports facilities we feel may be needed for our students.

This is the most current information we have at this time.  Please stay tuned to this site for updates.  If you have any questions regarding the high school, please feel free to contact Dr. John Eldridge at 919-742-4550.
